Materialised Sentiments
A CONTEXTUALIZED VIEW OF MATERIALITY
Shanghai
Overview
Shanghai—Materialised Sentiments is a group exhibition that aims to reveal diverse sentiments that lie in specific choices of material by focusing on the physical qualities of painting, sculpture, and installation works. The relationship between artist and material is immediate and direct; it also contains a long-standing enquiry into the definition of art and, more fundamentally, an exploration of human nature, as well as the unforgettable memories of history all viewed through a personal perspective in varied contexts. The exhibition echoes a tendency to deconstruct grand narratives by turning to the sphere of daily life, the personal and the microscopic, where materials play an intermediary role, rooted in reality and connected to the vision of freedom and imagination, through which emerges a panoramic view of time. The exhibition features works by Chen Yufan (b. 1973, China), Chun Kwang Young (b. 1944, Korea), Sayaka Ishizuka (b. 1980, Japan), Pino Pinelli (b. 1938, Italy), Ren Ri (b. 1984, China), and Yinka Shonibare MBE (b. 1962, UK).
